Valerie Sanderson: Chairperson
Valerie is owner of Valerie’s Fermented Foods and Seasonal Soups (formerly Soups in Season) and provides food to local restaurants, deli’s and retailers. She is an active proponent of local farmers and a strong local food economy. She sources as many of her ingredients from local growers as possible and is committed to building the future of sustainable regional local food.
Jim Ross: Havesome Hogs: Member of Board
Jim is currently owner of Havesome Hogs farm in South Slocan and is an Information Technology field contractor while running the farm. He is the only BCSPCA Humane Certified hog farm in BC and the only certified farm in the Kootenays. The farm also produces lamb for sale. Prior to farming, he worked in the construction and forestry sectors, as a crisis line operator, seismic worker, setup safety proceedure for World Cup ski races to name a few. I know the people, our history and the issues we face. My expertise is in logistics, infrastructure, troubleshooting and startups.
Brendan Parsons: Member of Board
Brendan currently owns Salix and Sedge Farm in the Salmo Valley with his partner Cali Olleck. They began Salix and Sedge in 2015 producing a large variety of vegetables for our Community SharedAgriculture (CSA) program, the Salmo Valley Farmers Market, and a small amount for some local retailers. They are working at converting old pastures into more field space that will be put into production. In addition to growing vegetables, they also manage a small apiary, and annually raise chickens and pigs for meat. Their mission is to grow nutritious, high quality food for our community while maintaining respect for our land and ecosystem.
Kim Charlesworth: Founding Member of Board, Treasurer
Kim is currently the coordinator for the Nelson Food Cupboard Garden. Kim is passionate about food security and supporting the viability of local farming. She brought together the founding team of KBFPC; taking it from a concept 4 years ago to planting the seed idea, undertaking research, into an implementation plan. She has been assisted by many highly qualified volunteers to make the vision of KBFPC a reality. She is a former city counselor of the City of Nelson and ran as the Green Party candidate for Nelson-Creston in the 2017 provincial election.
Dick Martin: Member of Board
Dick currently operates Affinity Place Farm in Argenta.
Dave Gooch: Member of Board
Dave currently operates Iron Bluff Farm in Salmo. He has been farming for over 35 years in BC. He has extensive working knowledge of both plants and animals in a farm. Dave’s expertise, knowledge and passion for local organic farming is apparent not only through the quality of his produce but his willingness to support the community. He has been a Certified Organic Farmer for 17 of those years.
