Why Kootenay & Boundary Local Food is Important

Increasing the availability of Good local food assures the long term viability of our agricultural sector and strengthens our regional economy.  KBFPC members are committed to working to increase local food production in the Kootenay & Boundary from farm to plate.

Providing food from our bio-region is important for our local economy. This will offset rising costs, transportation issues, and environmental concerns. Raising more high quality food locally is healthier both for ourselves and our communities.

Our Co-op  has two constituent groups of members; farmers and secondary food processors.  Our mission is to increase food security in our region by enabling our members to maximize their production capacity. We are serving their needs with a supportive infrastructure including: marketing and distribution, a subsidized labor pool and creating storage to extend the selling season.

What members have in common is that they are local, producing fresh high quality food. Some members are KOGS certified organic, some are Kootenay Mountain Grown (KMG) certified and some livestock farms are SPCA certified.  Everything we distribute is from our neighbour farms and processing kitchens. In the past you might not have been set up to buy local food at restaurants or grocery stores directly, but KBFPC is removing that barrier.
